August 14, 2006

Their have been a few Yellowfin and a few Dorado caught this past weekend 16 to 18 miles off the point. But, nothing in great numbers. The water is still a little to cool but appears to be warming slowly.

Most boats continue targeting the Yellowtail and White Seabass which has been a pretty constant bite in El Saccorro and at the 240 Spot. Some of the White Seabass were well over 50 pounds and the Yellowtail up 30+ pounds.

It still looks like we could be in for some good Yellowfin action if we continue to have warm days and nights and the wind dies down.

I will be going out several days this week and weekend and I will let you know.

August 7, 2006

We had a great weekend of Yellowtail fishing as the bite continued to be wide open at various locations in the area. Most boats hung out at the 240 Spot and loaded up on 10 to 25 pounders. Again most were caught on live bait by either slow trolling or fly lining.

The White Seabass bite was also very good in El Saccorro as well as Pavillion Bay with some boats catching as many as 9 fish in the 20 to 50 pound class.

The water still remains somewhat cool (69 to 71 degrees)but a couple of boats ran outside to look for Tuna and picked up a couple of small Dorado but no Yellowfin.

Hey, it's only the first of August and it's very warm so the outlook here is still very hopeful for a good Yellowfin and Dorado bite.

July 31, 2006

The Yellowfin and Dorado showed up just 13 miles off the point last Friday. Not in great numbers but they were here. The key word is were. Each boat that targeted them Saturday caught 2 to 3 Dorado and 1 or 2 Yellowfin. The Dorado averaged 10 to 15 pounds and the Yellowfin were about the same. One strange thing that I noticed is their were a lot of nice kelp paddies but absolutely nothing on them. Not even the typical firecracker size Yellowtail that is common this time of year.

Sunday the water cooled to 69 degrees and was quite rough and very few of either spieces were caught.

Most boats hung out at the 240 spot or Ben's Rock where the Yellowtail bite was very good with some nice quality fish being caught. Some of the Yellowtail were pushing to 40 pounds and averaged about 20 to 25 pounds. You had to sort through the Bonito but when you hooked one (Yellowtail) the fight was on. Most were caught on live bait by fly lining or slow trolling and quite a few on the yoyo off the bottom.

We are all hopeful that August will bring back the warmer water and the Yellowfin. Time will tell and I will let you know.

(Pictures of some of the fish I caught this weekend are on the top of my photo gallery page.)

July 24, 2006

Sorry for missing last weeks report.

As most of you are aware, their was a tournament here in San Quintin Saturday. It was quite busy and all seemed to go off without a hitch. A lot of Yellowtail, a few White Seabass and Sand Bass were caught. Only a few Dorado and no Tuna.

The largest White Seabass was 52 pounds, the largest Yellowtail weighed in at 28 pounds and ther largest Sand Bass was 8 pounds.

Lots of smaller Yellowtail were caught off the Island on Rapalas and live bait and that seems to be what everyone is targeting after the tourny.

The best bottom fishing seemd to be down in El Sacorro and the White Seabass were cought in Pavillion just south of the bay. The water seems to be cooling off again but, I will keep a close eye on it and let you know. Were all still hoping for the Tuna and Dorado show this year in big numbers and big fish.

July 10, 2006

The Yellowtail bite continues but not as strong as last week with most being caught around San Martin Island as well outside kelp patties. The bottom fishing remains good as well.

Their are rumors of Yellowfin being some 40 to 50 miles out and we are all hopeful they will come in a little closer for the tournament on the 22nd. Most boats are booked up for this annaul event but private boaters are welcome. Those who would like information on the tourament are welcome to e-mail me.

July 3, 2006

The Yellowtail bite has been wide open and they are just about everywhere. Possibly the best bite I have ever seen in some thirty plus years. Not only are almost all boats catching limits but there are some really nice fish as well. A lot over 30 pounds and some even pushing 40 pounds.  Most are being caught on the yo-yo in 70 to 80 feet of water while others on live bait either slow trolling or fly lining. It is awesome fishing.

There were also some White Seabass caught off of Pavillion and one at San Martin Island. I didn’t see the one at the Island but the others were between 50 and 60 pounds also caught on the iron.

The water continues to warm up with the hot and humid weather we have been having and it is also getting real clean. All signs are pointing to a very good year of fishing here in San Quintin and I hope to see you all here.

June 26, 2006

The Yellowtail bite at San Martin Island was wide open on Friday with most boats catching limits of 10 to 15 pounders by slow trolling live bait. The largest being just over 25 pounds. However the bite died off Saturday and Sunday due to all the pressure from all the boats and anglers. But the fish are still their. Most fared well with about 3 fish per angler. Those that can fish during the week should do well as there are fewer boats out and fewer anglers.
The bottom fishing for Rock Cod, Ling Cod, Sand Bass and Sugar Bass (Kelp Bass) remains great with very nice catches of really nice fish.
The weather also cooperated with nice warm days in the 70's and not a whole lot of wind.
The water continues to warm and is about 65 degrees just 10 to 15 miles out. We all have our fingers crossed that the tuna show up shortly with the warmer water and warmer days.
I will let you know and also keep you advised on the Yellowtail bite all week as well.

June 19, 2006
The winds we had earlier in the week kept most boats off the water and unfortunatly it scared off the fisherman for the weekend as well. Their were very few boats out. Unfortunate because it was a great weekend weather wise to fish! The bottom fishing remains very, very good with limits of big Rock Cod, Ling Cod and Sand Bass. People, these are really nice fish and the best table fare. If you like fish, you don't want to miss out on this bite.
The local Yellowtail fishing is still slow with a few showing at the 240 Spot and Ben's rock as well as the Island. Most are being caught by slow trolling live bait. But if you run outside to say 20 or 25 miles and are lucky enough to spot a kelp patty, you should do very well. The water temp. varies from mid 50,s just off shore to the mid 60's to 20 miles out. Hopefully we will get a storm out of the south and push up some warmer water soon. I will let you know.

This report is normally up-dated weekly. However if a new bite shows up I will inform you immedatly! So visit me often for any new developments.
